Book Contribution – Older People – CAE Gold Plus Ex. Max. p.31

In Poland in most situations older people are well respected. This is because of the polish culture. People think that they should listen to their parents because of their age and knowledge. It probably will not be changed in the near future.

It is common in Poland to meet a family which consists of three generations of people living under the same roof: grandparents, parents and children. Such situation is convenient for everyone. Parents can work while children are watched out by grandparents, who believe that they still are very important and useful. Moreover, it is very convenient for the second generation to take care about their parents.

In very catholic Poland respect to the elderly is a must. Even in public transport (i.e. in buses) youths give up place to the elderly.

Although nursing homes in Poland are full of old people, the majority of people in advanced age live with their families. The polish society believe that grandpa and grandma should stay with their family to the end of their lives. Helping older people is not seen as a duty, but rather as a part of the polish culture.

There is lack of new houses and flats in Poland and new generations have to live with their parents. This is common in this part of Europe, so no one is surprised seeing three or even four generations living in one big house.

Overall, I would say that there is a very positive attitude to the older people in Poland. There is no sign that this will change in the near or far future. As a Pole, I hope everything will stay as is.
